Digital Twin vs Digital Shadow
A digital shadow generally emphasizes one-way physical-to-digital data flow; a twin may support a broader or bidirectional relationship.
Digital shadow
Usually updated from the physical asset without automated digital-to-physical control.
Security emphasis
Protect source authenticity, data integrity, provenance, freshness, and representation accuracy.
Digital twin
May include observation, analysis, prediction, optimization, recommendation, and bidirectional interaction.
Security emphasis
In addition to data assurance, protect decision and command authority.
Why the distinction matters
Labels do not determine risk. Document actual data flows, synchronization, decision rights, and physical authority. A system marketed as a “twin” may behave like a static model; a system called a “model” may participate in an automated control loop.
