Digital Twin vs Digital Thread
A digital thread connects lifecycle information; a digital twin represents and relates to a particular entity, system, or process.
Digital thread
Connects information across design, engineering, manufacturing, operation, maintenance, and retirement.
Security emphasis
Protect lifecycle identity, access, provenance, configuration, intellectual property, and supplier handoffs.
Digital twin
Provides a purpose-specific representation and relationship for an entity, system, or process.
Security emphasis
May consume and contribute to the digital thread while carrying runtime synchronization and authority risk.
Why the distinction matters
Labels do not determine risk. Document actual data flows, synchronization, decision rights, and physical authority. A system marketed as a “twin” may behave like a static model; a system called a “model” may participate in an automated control loop.
